Are you wanting to lose 20 lbs, but after starving yourself all day long, you find yourself eating a bowl of ice cream late in the evening? I know what that is like because I have been there, too. For most of us, dieting is a big frustration. To lose weight, I had to reduce the amount of food I was eating, but my body kept telling me to eat. It is a vicious no-win circle. Or, at least it was. I saw a story on 60 Minutes that led me in a new direction and eventually to weight loss.
The story I saw on 60 Minutes was about a sharp-tasting cactus-like plant called Hoodia Gordonnii. This plant grows in the Kalahari Desert in southern Africa and can grow up to 6 feet tall. For thousands of years, the Bushmen that live in that area have sucked on the heart of this plant to decrease their appetite and increase their energy. Known about for many years, the first scientific study of this plant for being a diet suppressant was not done until the mid-1960′s and it took almost 30 years to find that specific ingredient. It is known as P57 (or p-57) and it was licensed to a British pharmaceutical company called Phytopharm.
Twenty million dollars of clinical research showed that if P57 was administered to obese people, they would reduce their calorie intake by 1,000 – 2,000 calories per day. The studies showed that this substance reduced the urge of these people to eat. The product had great promise and in December, 2001 Phytopharm sold the worldwide marketing license to Pfizer for $32 million.
The only problem was, Pfizer did not plan on harvesting this plant from the Kalahari Desert. Their plan was to produce a synthetic substitute for this product. After two years of study, Pfizer concluded that making a synthetic molecule as a substitute for P57 was cost prohibitive. They pulled out of their deal with Phytopharm.
In the meantime, Phytopharm negotiated with the Bushmen of the Kalahari desert to secure the rights to the majority of the Hoodia plants. They also filed a patent on Hoodia Gordonnii as a weight loss product. In December, 2004 Phytopharm signed a deal with Unilever (with annual sales over $50 Billion). Unilever was given the right to use the Hoodia Gordonnii extract in their products including their product called Slimline. These products began their releases in 2008 and are intended for weight loss, from just a few lbs or if you need to lose 20 lbs or more.
Hoodia has had so much “hype” that there are a lot of imitations for this product. The real Hoodia comes only from the Kalahari desert and it is the same extract that the Bushmen have used to fight off hunger for thousands of years. Many other companies have seen dollar signs flash before their eyes. They will throw just about anything into a capsule and call it “100% Hoodia”. And, by the time their products are tested and their claims have been proved false, they have pulled up stake and gone elsewhere or they have gone out of business. Also, P57 cannot be produced synthetically in a cost effective manner – it cannot be done.
Hoodia reduces the urge to eat. What makes this diet supplement different from others is that most supplements try to speed up your metabolism so that your body will burn more calories. But, what happens to anything that runs on “high” for too long? They burn out! In the human body, these type of supplements can lead to higher rates of heart attack and stroke. This was the problem with ephedra. This is not a problem with Hoodia. Hoodia with its’ P57 fools the brain into thinking that your body is full. Thus, you will eat less which leads to calorie reduction. And, weight loss is simple math – eat less, lose pounds (click HERE for more about The Science of Hoodia).
The Hoodia Gordonnii product discussed and shown in this article is the real thing. It comes from the Kalahari desert and with every bottle sold, a royalty is paid to the Bushmen in that area.
